Our history begins 130 years ago, in 1892, when very few textile manufacturers existed in Canada. Charles-Xavier Tranchemontagne opened a modest import business of woolen material and cloth in Old Montreal, under the name C.X. Tranchemontagne & Cie Ltée. –  the very first francophone business to import fabrics into North America. It wasn’t long until the business began to take off, mainly due to Mr. Tranchemontagne’s reputation of remarkable professionalism.

In the 1940s, another textile company emerged alongside C.X. Tranchemontagne. Founded by the Lieberman Family, Les Toiles Lieberman specialized in the import, distribution, and manufacturing of hospitality products. Respected and praised within the hospitality industry, the name Lieberman became synonymous with quality and longevity.

In 1979, Les Toiles Lieberman was sold to Mr. André L’Africain. Seeing the opportunity to better serve customers, Mr. L’Africain then bought C. X. Tranchemontagne & Cie, and merged the two family-owned and operated businesses, creating Lieberman Tranchemontagne. Proud to be at the helm of LT, a company steeped in a century of Canadian history, Mr. L’Africain vowed to honor the namesakes of the Lieberman and Tranchemontagne families and their core values of quality and reliability. Soon after, Mr. L’Africain opened an impressive new office space in Montreal’s Saint-Laurent neighborhood, which has allowed the company to flourish. In 2019, Mr. L’Africain passed the reins of the company to his son, Marc-André L’Africain, who has maintained this value system that has come to be revered at LT.

Our century-old history means that we have developed a close relationship with our carefully selected partners. Like any manufacturing company, we rely on suppliers for a wide range of materials and services that allow us to succeed.
